Fast-growing, shiny and thick hair is a pregnancy symptom that many women have. But unfortunately in the months following delivery, you may experience postpartum hair loss. Then when your hair begins to fall out it can come as a huge shock. For me it was very stressful, even if I knew that this will happen.
Hair loss begins about 3 months after childbirth and may continue through the first year. The amount of hair loss is different for every woman and is not always relative to hair quality or quantity during pregnancy. Postpartum hair loss is normal because of the changes related to the hormone levels before, during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy, you have elevated estrogen levels and you lose less hair. When estrogen levels go back down after childbirth, you begin to lose hair as you did before. And in addition to this, you lose all that extra hair that wasn’t falling out during your pregnancy.
As postpartum hair loss is a normal result of your changing hormones, it is not something that you can stop. But there are steps you can take to minimize the effects of postpartum hair loss and help promote healthy hair growth with natural remedies.
Helpful tips for relief postpartum hair loss:
As we know, a healthy diet is very important for optimal health. А healthy diet will help your overall recovery after delivery. Just make sure you include enough fresh vegetables and fruits for vitamins and nutrients. Eat foods high in vitamins A, B, C, E, iron, zinc, copper, magnesium and selenium. Foods that improve hair health include dark leafy vegetables (for iron and vitamin C), eggs (for vitamin D), potatoes and carrots (for beta-carotene) and fish (for omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium).
Also very important – don’t forget to drink plenty of water!
You can take vitamin or mineral supplements to promote hair regrowth. The most important vitamins for boosting your hair health are vitamin B complex, Biotin, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc. But before start to take them to speak with your doctor to make sure that is ok for you. In my case, I needed extra iron and biotin, but maybe for you it won’t be the same. To increase iron levels I used Schuessler Salt Iron Phosphate, homeopathic remedy Ferrum Phosphoricum 30 ch and Biotin (Keep in mind that biotin should be combined with vitamin B complex because if you only take biotin it is possible to have acne). I also added a lot of parsley, spinach and broccoli to my menu. Honestly, I don’t like spinach, but I found a way to eat it because I needed more iron. I prepared a smoothie with bananas (and/or apples), parsley and spinach. I still make it sometimes, because I liked it.
Biotin is a vitamin of group B (vitamin B7) that helps hair growth and prevents it from falling. The way it happens is by helping to synthesize hair protein like keratin. The lack of biotin is associated with hair loss. Biotin-rich foods are eggs, yogurt, almonds, walnuts, legumes, whole grains, milk and meat. You can also use a shampoo with biotin. For better results you can take biotin supplements, but if you want to, first consult your doctor.
Whether it’s a postpartum hair loss or other problem with the type and strength of hair, regular massage is useful for the scalp as it improves blood circulation and strengthens hair roots
You can massage the scalp while applying a mask. This way, besides taking a massage, you will help the product you use for your hair mask to penetrate faster. The most effective products for hair masks are almond oil, castor oil and aloe vera gel. My advice is to combine almond and castor oil for a hair mask.
Pure almond oil contains all kinds of healthy ingredients for hair like Omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, vitamin E and magnesium. Put a small amount of almond oil around the root area, after that with your fingers massage your scalp for a few minutes. Then, put on a shower cap and let the oil absorb into your scalp and hair for about an hour. To wash the oil from your hair use shampoo.
Castor oil is rich in ricinic acid, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin E, minerals and proteins which nourish hair and stimulate its growth. Also it has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. A mask with castor oil once a week is enough to boost the health of your hair. Use an extra dose of shampoo to wash the oil out of your hair because the
castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency and is difficult to wash off.
Another natural product that you can successfully use for hair care after birth is aloe vera. Aloe Vera gel provides nutrients that promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. You can make an excellent hair mask with aloe vera gel and a little lemon juice. Apply to the base of the scalp and hair. Leave for about 20 minutes, then wash as usual.
It’s normal to feel embarrassed right after your baby’s birth. Many new responsibilities are emerging. But, stress is not beneficial for both your hair and your overall health. Excessive stress can make postpartum hair loss even stronger. That’s why it’s important to minimize it. Try to get enough sleep. Practice different relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, relaxation music, sports or walks in the park. Whatever makes you happy.
Treat your hair carefully
Hair is more fragile when wet so brush gently after you wash your hair. Or, even better, wait for it to dry. When it is possible try to avoid using hot rollers or straightening irons to prevent further damage.
You can also try a new hairstyle that will refresh your hair and make you feel like a brand new person.
Be patient and accept that the postpartum hair loss is a normal part of recovering.
